JOINT LINE MEET ON SUNDAY, 1-OCT-2006 Posted Tuesday, September 26 2006 at 2125 h MDT Mike emailed to remind me that he's set up another Joint Line Railfan Meet for this Sunday, 1-Oct-2006. As usual, it'll be at the parking lot at the north end of Palmer Lake, CO, starting at 1000h. If you're coming in from I-25, just take County Line Road west to Palmer Lake - the meet will be on your left, right before the crossing. Look forward to seeing folks up there - the weather looks great for this weekend (70s and sunny). Update (9/29 - 0902h): Sorry, folks, won't be able to make it. I'll be out of town this weekend. - NDHolmes
UP... DOWN... UP... DOWN... Posted Monday, September 25 2006 at 1408 h MDT Sorry for all of the service interruptions recently. It's been a combination of hardware failures on my end, hardware failures at the central office, and problems with my phone line in damp weather. Hopefully the hardware issues are drawing to a close (replaced a bunch of stuff in the server yesterday and my ISP changed a failing DSLAM card last week), so now it's just down to the phone line. It only happens when it's been wet for several hours, and usually around here that's well after the Qwest guys have gone home. We're working on it, thanks for bearing with us... - NDHolmes
NEW TRIP REPORT - CHINESE STEAM Posted Sunday, September 24 2006 at 1026 h MDT After being on the road for a while, then procrastinating for nearly a week, I finally got photos online from last weekend's excursion runs in Iowa and Illinois that were powered by two Chinese QJ-class 2-10-2s.
These runs got more railfan attention than just about anything I've ever seen, but in case you were living under a rock for the past four months: Railroad Development Corp of Pittsburg - Iowa Interstate's parent company - purchased two Chinese QJs and had them completely overhauled to FRA standards while in China. They then imported them to the US, where they hope to sell them to American tourist line operators looking for modern, reliable steamers at a bargain price. As part of this, they doubleheaded a number of excursions out of Rock Island, IL, in conjunction with a celebration of the 150th anniversary of the first railroad bridge over the Mississippi River.
Included in the trip report are all four runs - including Saturday's triple-header (with Milwaukee 261) - as well as Monday's steam-powered freight train. You can find the new trip report [here]. - NDHolmes
