  • RATON PASS LINE SOLD
    Posted Monday, November 28 2005 at 2240 h MST
The State of New Mexico has just purchased 300 miles of the Raton Pass main between Belen, NM, (on the ex-ATSF Transcon line) and Trinidad, CO. This is the line that runs north through Albuquerque, Lamy, Las Vegas, and Raton Pass. The primary goal of this was to establish a commuter train corridor from Belen to Lamy (and over the SFS to Santa Fe). Interestingly, they also picked up the section across northern NM and over Raton Pass into Trinidad. Yahoo News has the BNSF press release here.

Okay, so it's not strictly Rio Grande news, but considering how much Raton Pass and the ATSF played into the D&RG/D&RGW's history, it's at least strongly related. Plus it's current Colorado/New Mexico rail news... -

  • HERE WE GO AGAIN - RGRPC CALLS IT QUITS
    Posted Wednesday, November 2 2005 at 1639 h MST
The Rio Grande Railway Preservation Corporation (RGRPC) is the management company, associated with the Friends of the C&TS, contracted by the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad Commission to operate the shops and the railroad. As of today, 2-Nov-2005, the RGRPC has officially notified the Commission that they are terminating the management contract. The press release is online here. Nobody whose not in the RGRPC or on the Commission is exactly sure what this means, but Jay has posted that the Chama Shops will continue to operate under Commission control over the winter. At least that means that the routine maintenance that has been started will be completed, and there will be whole locomotives for next season. Updates as they become available. - NDHolmes
