The six D&RGW Class C-17 Consolidation (2-8-0) locomotives were reclassed from various Class 70 and Class 71N locomotives during the D&RG-D&RGW transitional renumbering/reclassing of 1924. Interestingly enough, most of the rest of the Class 70 units became Class C-19.

Note 1: The unit to become D&RGW 305 was built in 1895 as the Utah Central #1. in 1898, it became Rio Grande Western Class 16N #1. The unit was standard-gauged in 1901, renumbered to RGW 13, and became RGW Class 77S. In 1908, it became D&RG 555, still Class 77S. In 1918, it was once again converted to 3-foot (narrow) gauge, kept its number as D&RG 555, and assigned class 71N. In 1924, it was renumbered to D&RGW 305 and given class C-17. The unit was scrapped during 1927.

Note 2: The unit to become D&RGW 306 was originally built as Great Falls & Canada #3. Went to Utah Central before 1898, then to the Rio Grande Western as their Class 16N #3 in 1898. The unit was standard-gauged in 1901, renumbered to RGW #1, and became RGW Class 77S. In 1908, it became D&RG 554, still Class 77S. In 1918, it was once again converted to 3-foot (narrow) gauge, kept its number as D&RG 554, and assigned class 71N. In 1924, it was renumbered to D&RGW 306 and given class C-17. The unit was scrapped during Jan-1935.
