US Army 3000US Army 4700NUS Army Transportation Corps 4700N was a 4-axle, 2 truck adjustable gauge diesel tried by the D&RGW for several years around 1954. Its most notable service on the D&RGW was leading the 1954 Rocky Mountain Railroad Club excursion, being coupled to the front of D&RGW 476 (numbered #7 for the occasion). Most reports say that 4700N was used as a bombing target at the China Lake Naval Weapons Testing Center in California, and was scrapped shortly afterwards. User "stephen" on the Narrow Gauge Discussion Forum conveyed a possibly conflicting disposition on 10-Aug-2003. He stated that, "The 4700N was likely dismantled for parts for the 4000 series standard gauge diesels, and was dismantled at the U. S. Army Railroad Transportation Corps Rail Shop at Hill Air Force Base. I was talking to one of the retired shop mechanics and he said that he remembered a 4000 series locomotive being parted out in the early 1960's and that it was somewhat different from the other 4000 series locomotives." It's possible that it was parted out before becoming a bombing target.
