"Narrow gauge" refers to railroads built with less than the US standard gauge of 4 feet 8.5 inches between the inner edges of the rails. In Colorado, Utah, and New Mexico, this almost always meant three feet between the rails. While there were mining and industrial railroads with less than three foot gauge, the common carrier lines (Denver & Rio Grande, Denver, South Park & Pacific, etc.) were all three foot. |
