On July 15, a strong thunderstorm north of NA Junction dumped large amounts of water in a very short amount of time. Combined with an already rather wet year, the torrent of water overtopped the sides of the Colorado Canal, an irrigation ditch that skirts the bluffs to the north of the Arkansas River in that area. The resulting flood waters raced down towards the main river channel, overwhelming the former Missouri Pacific line and Colorado Highway 96 in the process. The road suffered only minor damage, but the railway is left hanging in a few spots where culverts could not handle the onslaught.
