Once unveiled, UP 1989 was assigned to the nightly Denver-Pueblo and Pueblo-Denver trains. On Thursday, 6-Jun-2006, it left Denver going west as the lead unit on MNYGJX-06, a North Yard to Grand Junction extra. Once there, it was temporarily placed pulling coal trains over the North Fork, between Grand Junction and the mines east of Delta. On Sunday night, 9-Jun-2006, the unit was sent back to Denver on the point of MRONY.
These are photos taken by Matt Darling of the unit in and around Grand Junction.
Mid-afternoon on Saturday, 1989 went up the North Fork on its second trip to the mine. This time, the assignment was CBRVL-06, the coal train that runs from the North Fork mines down to the Valmont generating station, near Boulder.
