UP 1989 (the D&RGW heritage SD70ACe) made its first trip all the way west across the former Rio Grande sytem. The unit left Denver on Saturday morning (21-Oct-2006) as power on the MNYRO-21. Thanks to a heads-up off the Rio Grande list (thanks Dave!), several folks were able to catch the move. Unfortunately, for the first segment (Denver-Grand Junction), the unit was running in reverse and trailing behind two units.
Once in Grand Junction, the power was rearranged so that 1989 was in the lead, followed by UP 6720 (a CNW patch job) and another UP GE that was dropped at Helper. The train departed Helper this morning a bit after 1000h, well into good light.
The unit will be paired up with the SP heritage unit (UP 1996) for some work as part of an "Officer on the Train" operation for the next week.
Quinn Clegg got out and caught this morning's move, and kindly sent a few photos so that the rest of us could see as well. Thanks!
