Well, my earliest pictures date from November 1981, and the GP40s clearly
had white step handrails at that time. The white terminates just short of
the first stanchion, on all corners of the unit. I'll check my other stuff
from the period. But it definitely didn't *start* with the SD50s.

Robert,
No need to swear <g>. Actually, I've seen SD40T-2s with
white handrails,
particularly in Pentrex's 1987 vintage Denver & Rio Grande Western
video
and some of the GP30 shots in the Diesel Era article also have white

handrails. In fact, seeing the white handrails in that video is
really
what started my wondering. Something else from that video also got
my
brain wondering ... namely when did the Rio Grande stop using
cabooses. In
the video, trains pulled by pre-SD50, e.g. SD40T-2, GP40, GP40-2,
power
appear with cabeese, but not those pulled by SD50s.
Regarding the Pentrex video, does anyone know the background
to it? For
an "overview" of the entire system, the video spends an inordinate
amount
of time covering the Moffat Route and then gives only brief coverage
to
Utah, Tennessee Pass, and the Joint Line. Seems rather curious that
an
overview of the system should be so lopsided. And, for that matter,
how
did the Pentrex folks wrangle a ride in the cab?

Keith
