Jim-

The article is Diesel Era Volume 10 Number 4, which is July/August 1999.=C2=
=A0 I don't know the author (am not at home right now) and the Withers Publ=
ishing site doesn't reveal that.=C2=A0 However, the DE article most definit=
ely asserts that there were D&RGW F5's.=C2=A0 Thanks for the link to Don's =
specific page on the F5; I hadn't seen that link, and the main roster page =
at http://utahrails.net/drgw/rg-diesels-4.php#f5a-drgw5551 is rather ambigu=
ous on the subject.=C2=A0 I read the F5 page and his data and argument, and=
I completely agree with him, that the Grande had none.=C2=A0 One thing is =
sure-- that time was one of transition and rapid change.=C2=A0 I also was a=
ble to confirm something I suspected, that the DE article relied on Joe Str=
apac's book as a source on the F5 question, which may not be the most iron-=
clad of sources.
The DE article says that the 556 set was delivered with F3-style slotted dy=
namic brake vents.=C2=A0 If the also had the D17 traction motor, it seems t=
hey should have been classified as F3's.=C2=A0 However, as I believe they w=
ere later upgraded on both features, however they started out they certainl=
y ended up as F7's.
For the modeler:=C2=A0 find a dated photograph! =C2=A0 (as always)

I haven't read this in a while but there is Don Strack's page on this subje=
ct at UtahRail.net:
http://utahrails.net/drgw/rg-f5.php

According to the article, there were no F5's.=C2=A0 Was it Don that wrote i=
t or someone else.=C2=A0=C2=A0
Cheers, Jim Fitch
