The Gates plant was built in the late 1910s. There is a series of photos do=
cumenting its construction in the on-line Dever Public Library Wetsern Hist=
ory digital collection. The plant ceased operations in 1991 and then steadi=
ly deteriorated into an abandoned derilect ruin until demolished in 2013-20=
14.

The main plant complex was to the east of the Joint Line mains, and was swi=
tched by the C&S, while the inbound materials (raw rubber, carbon black, so=
lvants) complex was to the west of the main, switched by the Rio Grande. I=
have found a single photo showing the Grande=E2=80=99s South Local with an=
ACFX CF 4589 carbon black car lettered for Ashland Chemical. (One of Chuck=
=E2=80=99s from the list files?)

Carbon black is mainly produced from petrolium coke in Oklahoma and the Gul=
f Coast region, which points toward the car routing and interchange point. =
I have found a single photo of a northbound D&RGW Joint Line train with one=
of the older design carbon black covered hoppers. That=E2=80=99s not surpr=
ising since any Gulf Coast cb traffic would more likely be handled by ATSF =
or C&S direct to Denver, and any wb Oklahoma cb traffic to be interchanged =
in Denver via the RI, or in Pueblo by the MP.

> Gentlemen,
> Does anyone have any photos of the cars the carbon black was delivered in=
.. at the the plant and how they were routed onto the Rio Grande. Did they =
originate on the D&RGW or where they received from interchange from other r=
ailroad(s), and at what interchange locations, Denver. Pueblo, Salt Lake ot=
hers? Also when was this plant built and how long has it been in operation.=
I am sure it was over several decades and most probably several types of c=
ars were used to deliver the carbon black over the years. I know that there=
are now newer carbon black cars in service now, and models have just becom=
e available that represent those cars. I know that carbon black also moved =
in two bay covered hoppers in earlier eras because I saw them but never got=
a photo of one. Models where also produced of these cars. Did carbon black=
move in box cars before covered hoppers became common, or was it moved in =
covered gondolas or some other special service car? Thanks for any info.
