I am the list owner of a couple of YahooGroups lists, the largest (RepowerAndRegear) had almost 1800 members.
Lately YG had become very unresponsive. It was taking almost 3 hours for a message
to post on the web page, much longer to get to members. Members wanting to leave

weren't allowed by YG; I had to do it manually. Photos could no longer be posted to
photo albums (less than 5% full). The list was over 16 years old, it was active, some

weeks over 100 messages would be posted. YG wasn't doing anything to help the situation,
which I understand as they had just been orphaned. I had planned to move last July
but members were reluctant, as the situation with YG got worse the move got more support.

Sunday was the breaking point I requested a transfer of the a backup copy of the database,
It successfully completed this morning; we lost two messages in the transfer.
We lost 190 members who had dead e-mail addresses (bounced delivery), four members left YG
to prevent being transferred, YG aborted their move, I had to do it manually to prevent them from
being moved to the new group It took me about an hour, overall their unsubscription was delayed
by over three hours. Within ten minutes of being welcomed to the new group, ten disgruntled,
anti-move members quit the new group, they were automatically purged, I didn't have to do it manually.
Messages were sent and received in a couple of minutes. WE lost two new messages in the transfer.

Since the new system evolved from the old YahooGroups (same developer) there are new features to learn,

but the performance improvement is noticeable. But I am running this on an old Vista HE computer

upgraded to Windows 7 Pro; still it's like I got anew computer. There's more support of list owners and

moderators, for me that will be the biggest change;things get fixed and improved.

I didn't kill the old list, but it is in a coma; no new members, new posts, new photos; it is in an

archived state, unmoderated. It will die with YG, not sooner. I wonder how often YG members will search the database?
It is so much easier to search the same database on the new group. In case the transfer failed due to YG
instability I had backed up member list to manually invite them to the new group. files and photos would have
to be downloaded and transferred individually, for that I would have needed help. But now it is done
and over, several other list owners have contacted me about the transfer, I am helping them as much as
I can. For every quitter there have been three thank yous. Many have been from overseas members, I did not
realize how difficult the YG problems had been for those in the Southern Hemisphere.

As for me, now it is a tremendous relief; like I had just crossed a rope bridge over chasm just before it collapsed.
An Indiana Jones moment.

FWIW Worry about the transfer made it more difficult than it was; however fear of trying to recover what might be
lost in the collapse of YG is what made me do it. We are glad we moved before we couldn't. Some lists that count

me as a member are not worth moving; RnR was.

When you think outside the box,
You are out of the loop.
