Pardon the multiple postings, but I wanted to make sure everybody is aware
of what we are doing with the contest room at this year's NNGC.

The Convention is just about six weeks away so I hope many of you attendees
are planning on bringing some good models for the contest. We are planning
all of the traditional contest categories such as Rod Locomotive, Freight
Cars, Structures, etc. A comprehensive list (and all the rules &
regulations) is posted on the Convention web site at:

http://www.37nngc.com/contests.html

... but we have a few other categories that are relatively new, and I'd
like to make sure everybody is aware of them.

First, we are continuing the popular Square Footer category, this year with
a Mining Theme (it is Colorado, after all!) This is any model, display,
structure, diorama, etc., that fits on a 12" x 12" base; any scale, any
gauge. it only needs to relate to mining in some form or another.

Second, the Convention Committee added a model challenge freight car
contest that will be awarded by the Committee itself. this year we have
chosen this to be a mining-related gondola. So any model of a gondola with
a mining theme can be entered in this special contest.

Third, we are continuing the individual Module and Modular Layout
categories. For this, someone's module can be entered both by itself and
as part of a modular layout.

The Contest Room is based on a lot of volunteer help, and we can still use
additional volunteers for this and for ALL other functions of the
Convention. Volunteer help is critical to having a great convention. The
areas for volunteer help include the following (in no particular order):

- registrations

- pre-event setup and post-event takedown

- vendor and clinic and contest room access

- vendor and clinician setup and support

- contest area support

- security assistance

- attendee and spouse/family hospitality

- modular layout support

- and possibly layout tour assistance.

We aren't asking the volunteers do help only out of the goodness of their
hearts, there will also be some goodies for the volunteers. Each volunteer
will receive a convention t-shirt (no, it doesn't say "I volunteered for
the 37th NNGC and all I got was this T-shrt!"). But the Committee will
also reimburse a portion of your registration fee, depending on
volunteering participation (hours and/or capability).

Essentially, for each 4 hour (or so) volunteer effort (basically a morning
or an evening session, or an afternoon session during set-up), we will
reimburse for a =C2=BC value of your registration already paid. Every
additional 4 hour volunteering will be reimbursed for another reimbursement
of =C2=BC value reimbursement your registration already paid. So if you de=
cided
to work for four of the six sessions, you would get a full reimbursement of
your registration.

If you are not able to attend the full convention and are not planning to
register we will offset a 4hr volunteer effort with access to another 4hr
convention window of activities. We will also include the ability to
attend 1 day of layout tours and the Saturday evening closing awards
ceremony and auction event. Any additional 4hrs of volunteering simply
follows the same compensation structure for those not participating as a
registered attendee.

As stated previously, we can use more volunteers in every area and as
possible. It would be great if you can mention this to any friends and/or
family who will also be in the area when the convention is running. If
you're interested in this, please contact Steve Swanson, Volunteer Chair,
at:

volunteers@37nngc.c...

BTW, we have over 100 new and familiar vendors, almost 50 exciting
clinicians giving two clinics each (including some hands-on clinics),
multiple modular layouts in various scales, dozens of unique small and
large home layouts, the famous world class NNGC contest, and the extensive
list of railroading things to do and see in Denver and around Colorado and
the region. Regionallly, there are a number of special events such as the
special passenger photo charter of Engine 315 before the convention on
August 28 (more info at http://www.drhs315.org/) and a special "RGS" photo
charter after convention on September 4, 5 and 6 (more info at
https://www.cumbrestoltec.org/news/394-save-the-date-photo-charter-septembe=
r-2017.html
).

We look forward to meeting everyone, sharing our city and hobby while
making new friends and re-acquainting with others.

Thanks again everyone. We appreciate your support to help us put on a
great convention.

Mike Conder - Contest Chair, 37th NNGC
