blockquote, div.yahoo_quoted { margin-left: 0 !important; border-left:1px =
#715FFA solid !important; padding-left:1ex !important; background-color:whi=
te !important; } So we are camping on the rim of Ruby Canyon this weekend. =
Yesterday i looked out and saw the MNYRO snaking its way towards Utaline si=
ding. Long train, with a large number of centerbeam and bulkhead flats and =
one remote on the rear. From my vantage i could see the track east of McDon=
ald creek. As the rear of the train came into view and approached the bridg=
e, suddenly it went into emergency and halted. That's weird, I thought, so =
I grabbed the camera and scanner and headed for the clifftop. =C2=A0When I =
arrived at the precipice and carefully looked over, I discovered a quarter-=
mile gap in the train!=C2=A0
For context, at this location the track hugs the cliff face on a thin strip=
of ground above the river, with no space even for an access road. The cond=
uctor was walking back to investigate, and soon I heard him tell the hogger=
that a a UP centrrbeam car had lost its drawbar completely. Engineer's res=
ponse? "Oh crap...". The conductor finally located the four-foot drawbar un=
der the 6th car of the rear half of the train. He wasn't confident that the=
y could safely roll over it.=C2=A0
So they spent the next four hours taking the BO car to a siding west of the=
re to set it out, =C2=A0coming back and wrestling the drawbar out from unde=
r the train, reconnecting and air checking the whole train again. Poor cond=
uctor must have walked three or four miles. They finally rolled off, hoping=
to make Mounds UT before they died on the law.=C2=A0
And all of this trapped Amtk No. 5 in Grand Junction. It finally went by at=
dusk, also about 4 hours late.=C2=A0

Interesting afternoon on a normally quiet stretch of railroad...
