I believe that the last iron ore loads dated to the late 1970's, although=
the mine had shut down before then.=20


The iron ore wasn't mined at Woody Creek. It came from an open pit mine f=
rom Ashcroft, an abandoned silver mining camp up the Castle Creek valley. I=
t was mined near Ashcroft, then brought out by double-bottom ore trucks to =
a point on Colorado route 82 opposite the Roaring Fork River from the loadi=
ng site. The ore was dumped, carried across the river by conveyor belt, pil=
ed up, then loaded onto the ore cars (actually conventional drop bottom ste=
el gondolas, then 3 bay hopper cars later on). The ore cars were set out em=
pty above the loader, the air brakes released, so the cars would roll downh=
ill and get loaded. Thus, while there was no need to station a switcher at =
Woody Creek, what switching needing to be done could be handled by the ore =
train.


The ore train was once daily, then bi-weekly, then as needed as mining op=
erations were curtailed.


The branch is abandoned, and has been for decades. Most of it is a bicycl=
e trail. Ironically enough, much of Highway 82 North of Aspen to the Eagle =
County line was former Colorado Midland Railway right-of-way.
