<span style="color:rgb(63, 63, 63);">I talked this morning with the bridge engineer who works for me, who coincidentally happens to be the former bridge manager for Rio Grande territory.&nbsp;</span><div style="color:rgb(63, 63, 63);"><br></div><div style="color:rgb(63, 63, 63);">The hook bolts on Rio Grande open-deck steel bridges are typically every fourth tie, but spacing may sometimes be less than this depending on length between floor beams, etc. The location along the length of the tie where the hook bolt is located depends on the width of the steel superstructure. &nbsp; No matter what, the hook bolt has to catch a flange of the steel superstructure beneath, and it&#39;s preferable to locate on the outside of the steel superstructure (not between the beams or girders). The preferred centerline location of the hook bolt is 9 inches from the field side of the base of the rail. &nbsp; If the steel superstructure is wider than that, the hook bolt will be alternatively located through both the guard timber (the longitudinal 5&quot; x 8&quot; timber drive-spiked to the ends of the ties). &nbsp;(Note that the guard timber is dapped at its joints with a drive spike through the dap so only one fastener is needed, and also to limit peeling of the guard timber). &nbsp;</div><div style="color:rgb(63, 63, 63);"><br></div><div style="color:rgb(63, 63, 63);">Generally D&amp;RGW used 3/4&quot; hook bolts with 1-1/8&quot; long heads, like this:</div><div style="color:rgb(63, 63, 63);"><br></div><div style="color:rgb(63, 63, 63);"><a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://lewisbolt.com/products/Inch_And_Eight_HookBolt/index.html">http://lewisbolt.com/products/Inch_And_Eight_HookBolt/index.html</a></div><div style="color:rgb(63, 63, 63);"><span style="word-spacing:normal;"><br></span></div><div style="color:rgb(63, 63, 63);"><span style="word-spacing:normal;">Commonly either a malleable iron washer and double steel nuts and a spring between the washer and the nuts are used, or an integrated nut-washer referred to as a &quot;dog nut.&quot; &nbsp; There are many variations in this.</span><br></div><div style="color:rgb(63, 63, 63);"><span style="word-spacing:normal;"><br></span></div><div style="color:rgb(63, 63, 63);"><span style="word-spacing:normal;">Rio Grande dapped its bridge ties, but UP does not. &nbsp;D&amp;RGW had quite a few practices that were different than other railroads, actually.</span></div><div style="color:rgb(63, 63, 63);"><span style="word-spacing:normal;"><br></span></div><div style="color:rgb(63, 63, 63);"><span style="word-spacing:normal;">So, your Rio Grande steel bridge deck details, in sum:</span></div><div style="color:rgb(63, 63, 63);"><span style="word-spacing:normal;"><br></span></div><div style="color:rgb(63, 63, 63);"><ul><li>Rail and plates, usually screwed to ties (sometimes spiked)<br></li><li>8&quot; x 8&quot; x 10&#39; hardwood bridge ties, and 8&#39; x 8&#39; x 14&#39; at lookouts, dapped to steel beams. &nbsp;(Note, ties should never be placed on top of lateral floor beams, because it screws up the bridge rating, but we&#39;ve seen a few railroads do this anyway)<br></li><li>5&quot; x 8&quot; guard timber drift spiked to the ends of ties, dapped at joints<br></li><li>3/4&quot; hook bolts every 4th tie (typically), located either 9&quot; from field side of rail base, or through guard timber, depending upon width of steel substructure.<br></li></ul></div><div style="color:rgb(63, 63, 63);"><br></div><div style="color:rgb(63, 63, 63);">Handrails and walkways -- rather unusual on D&amp;RGW, actually</div><div style="color:rgb(63, 63, 63);"><br></div><div style="color:rgb(63, 63, 63);">Use of inside guardrails is very bridge-specific -- it&#39;s a function of bridge type, length, age, track speed, tangent or curve, criticality of the structure, things in the vicinity of the bridge, whether over a highway, etc. One general practice is</div><div style=""><ul style="" class=""><li>Through trusses and pony trusses<br></li><li>Deck trusses and deck plate grirders on towers<br></li><li>Through plate girders longer than 100&#39;<br></li><li>Other structures designated by Chief Engineer</li></ul></div><div style="color:rgb(63, 63, 63);">I&#39;ve noticed from photographs that D&amp;RGW practice on inside guardrails has varied considerably. &nbsp; You would really want a photograph of the specific bridge at the specific timeframe. &nbsp; For example, the Colorado River Bridge on the Montrose Branch at Grand Junction would presumably qualify for guardrails as it&#39;s a multiple-span through truss, but looking at Jim Ozment&#39;s photos from 1960, it has none. &nbsp;Conversely, Bridge 631.66 on the main line at Lynn, a 64&#39; through plate girder, does have guardrails as seen in Ozment&#39;s photos from 1961.</div><div style="color:rgb(63, 63, 63);"><br></div><div style="color:rgb(63, 63, 63);"><br></div><div style="color:rgb(63, 63, 63);">Mark Hemphill</div><div style="color:rgb(63, 63, 63);"><span style="word-spacing:normal;"><br></span></div>
