I talked this morning with the bridge engineer who works for me, who coincidentally happens to be the former bridge manager for Rio Grande territory.&nbsp;<div><br></div><div>The hook bolts on Rio Grande open-deck steel bridges are typically every fourth tie, but spacing may sometimes be less than this depending on length between floor beams, etc. Current standard is The location along the length of the tie where the hook bolt is located depends on the width of the steel superstructure. &nbsp; No matter what, the hook bolt has to catch a flange of the steel superstructure beneath, and it&#39;s preferable to locate on the outside of the steel superstructure (not between the beams). The preferred centerline location of the hook bolt is 9 inches from the field side of the base of the rail. &nbsp; If the steel superstructure is wider than that, the hook bolt will be alternatively located through both the guard timber (the longitudinal 5&quot; x 8&quot; timber drive-spiked to the ends of the ties). &nbsp;(Note that the guard timber is dapped at its joints with a drive spike through the dap so only one fastener is needed, and also to limit peeling of the guard timber). &nbsp;</div><div><br></div><div>Generally D&amp;RGW used 3/4&quot; hook bolts with 1-1/8&quot; long heads, like this:</div><div><a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://lewisbolt.com/products/Inch_And_Eight_HookBolt/index.html">http://lewisbolt.com/products/Inch_And_Eight_HookBolt/index.html</a><br></div><div><span style="word-spacing:normal;"><br></span></div><div><span style="word-spacing:normal;">Commonly either a malleable iron washer and double steel nuts and a spring between the washer and the nuts are used, or an integrated nut-washer referred to as a &quot;dog nut.&quot; &nbsp; There are many variations in this.</span><br></div><div><span style="word-spacing:normal;"><br></span></div><div><span style="word-spacing:normal;">Rio Grande dapped its bridge ties, but UP does not. &nbsp;D&amp;RGW had quite a few practices that were different than other railroads, actually.</span></div><div><span style="word-spacing:normal;"><br></span></div><div><span style="word-spacing:normal;">So, your Rio Grande steel bridge deck details, in sum:</span></div><div><span style="word-spacing:normal;"><br></span></div><div><span style="word-spacing:normal;">1. Rail and plates, usually screwed to ties (sometimes spiked)</span></div><div><span style="word-spacing:normal;">2. 8&quot; x 8&quot; x 10&#39; hardwood bridge ties, and 8&#39; x 8&#39; x 14&#39; at lookouts, dapped to steel beams. &nbsp;(Note, ties should never be placed on top of lateral floor beams, because it screws up the bridge rating, but we&#39;ve seen a few railroads do this anyway)</span></div><div><span style="word-spacing:normal;">3. 5&quot; x 8&quot; guard timber drift spiked to the ends of ties, dapped at joints</span></div><div><span style="word-spacing:normal;">4. 3/4&quot; hook bolts every 4th tie (typically), located either 9&quot; from field side of rail base, or through guard timber, depending upon width of steel substructure.</span></div><div>5. &nbsp;Handrails and walkways -- rather unusual on D&amp;RGW, actually</div><div><br></div><div>Mark Hemphill</div><div><span style="word-spacing:normal;"><br></span></div><div><br></div>
